CONCLUSIONS Lithium titanate (LÌ2T1O3) powders were synthesized by combustion of the nitrate (lithium & titanium) -glycine gel and reaction of lithium carbonate-titania. The study on thermal decomposition and phase evolution behavior revealed that exothermic combustion sets in above 230°C while the endothermic carbonate-oxide reaction sets in over a broad range of temperature (400- 750°C). In both cases nano-crystalline oxide compounds formed. They were agglomerated and were dispersed by wet grinding using aqueous slurries at a pH of 10 and solid content of 20 weight percent.
Magnetic Analyses To confirm the Dy/Gd doping in the samples, the magnetic properties were measured, since Dy and Gd were known to be magnetic elements. Figures 3(a) and (b) show the M-H curves of each sample measured at 300 K and 5 K respectively. The magnetizations at 300 K of the ND and Dy/Gd doped samples, except for the Gd40 samples, decreased linearly with increasing the magnetic field. In addition, small spontaneous magnetization can be seen as well in the loops. These facts indicate that the samples exhibit diamagnetic behavior, but contained a small amount of ferromagnetic component.
