Jaggar claims that even positivist epistemologies allow a role for emotion in the (intuitive) suggestion of hypotheses for investigation, but rigorously exclude emotion from the processes of justification. However, if (as in the naturalized epistemologies typical of Quine [1985], Goldman [1986], Plantinga, and others) one cannot separate the processes of belief formation from the processes of belief justification then an epistemology of science itself must incorporate "values and emotions. Moreover, such an incorporation seems a necessary feature of all knowledge and conceptions of knowledge" (Jaggar 1989:156).

Wisdom is a virtue: Aristotle called it phronesis; St. " For Aristotle phronesis is a "bridge virtue," a virtue that links the moral and intellectual virtues. In brief, phronesis is the ability to put intellect into action. Properly, people of practical wisdom avoid the pitfalls of rashness in action and of refraining when they should act. Virtues, however, are properly not argued about, but shown. Consequently, chapter 4 will display increasingly accomplished exercises of the virtue of practical wisdom.

On many accounts, here ends the argument. The Wager has recently been defended by Lycan and Schlesinger (1989) and by Morris (1986b; 1992). Morris notes that Pascal's Wager Page 20 is not an ''epistemically unconcerned project" (Morris 1986b:261). The wagerer finds both belief and unbelief relatively on an epistemic par with each other: both make roughly equal appeal and both seem to have roughly equal support.
